1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, my dear son:
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
Apostle Paul's mentoring of young Timothy was not merely dependent on a set of skills but rather a deep relating relationship with his mentoree. Paul constantly remembered Timothy in his prayers; he recalled his tears - his difficulty and burden in his ministry at Ephesus; he longed to see him as like his true son. Paul deeply related with Timothy that he loved him as his only true son and always lifted him in Paul's prayers. Nevertheless, Paul also saw how God worked in Timothy's life according to His sovereign work. God had already chosen Timothy through his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. Timothy's sincere faith was inherited from his ancestors far beyond he was born on earth. Paul mentored Timothy to be the servant of God but at the same time believing that God had commenced His work in Timothy's life far beyond his mentoring work. Loving Timothy and trusting God's work in him was the key essence of Paul's mentoring with Timothy.
My Master Jesus, keep on strengthening my passion and equipping my skills in mentoring young leaders. But at the same time, cultivate in me a strong sense of faith in trusting God's sovereign works and the Spirit's continual guidance to all leaders' lives. And also imitate Paul to have a clear conscience and sincere love for all mentorees whom God put besides me. My Lord, may Your will be done through my mentoring and coaching works to all people You entrust to me.
