18 Do not get
drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the
Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and
songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always
giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ. 21 Submit
to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Paul encourages believers to be filled with the Spirit as they meet to worship and edify each other through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Be filled with the Holy Spirit is a command from the Lord and also to be realized in a communal life in the name of Jesus. Paul believes that being filled with the Holy Spirit is a normal Christian life and that is not something really supernatural or super-normal thing. The Holy Spirit desires us to be with Him and to be moved by Him as believers worship God and serve the Lord together. "Be filled with the Holy Spirit" is also a daily practice that we keep ourselves to be sensitive to His voice and to His work in us.
My dear Holy Spirit, thanks for helping me to avoid a car accident this morning due to the negligence of another driver. At the same time, You use a means from the "heaven" to speak to me that You are here and You are the One to protect and to speak to me everyday. I desire to know You more everyday that by your empowering I can be drawn near to the love of my heavenly Father and be following my Lord more closely day by day.
